SPRING SINGS!

Girl at piano

Newest in my  All Things Childhood gallery, “Practicing My Cross-Over Piece”

.

blue columbines

In the place where memory snapshots live, I hold close a scene so like this — so much the same  that it makes me almost hear again the sweet sounds of three little girls taking turns at piano practice.    I remember how sunlight felt its way into their room, played tic tac toe on the walls, skipped a glow across piano keys.   And simple chords played again and again amidst their  togetherness and laughter, breathing peace to my spirit with the light and dance-y freedom of it.

I was recuperating there with these friends after surgery and somehow the homey sounds of someone in the nearby kitchen preparing dinner, the baby entertaining and gurgling to herself on the floor with her toys strewn round,  while unstructured musical notes rose like a symphony tuning up… it stirred a restful sort of joy that just said…this is family, this is home.

Though I only recall a rented piano in my own growing up home at a time when I was too little to play… and I personally never learned more than plucking Heart and Soul with one finger from a school friend who lived round the block… I feel a sort of yearning for fingers on keys that is somehow satisfied deeply in watching these girls of my heart play.   A universality to it…

“There’s just something I love about listening to my girls practicing piano after school,” another friend wrote me around that time.   In between the lines, I could hear them too in imagination… in that can’t put into words sort of way those simple musical strains have of speaking warmth into an everyday afternoon.

I think of a time when my mom’s best friend from childhood invited us to hear her first piano piece ever.  She was about fifty when she’d decided to take lessons she’d longed for all her life, and excitement seemed to twinkle not only in her eyes but through her fingers as she played her simple tune that day.

Many years later, I spoke to her of that recital she’d given us.

“Oh honey, I never played the piano!” she avowed, memories drifting.

I wonder today… if she were to see this drawing… would it stir the leaves of those long forgotten pages of her life, bring back the musical notes?

I like to think so.

I’d love to hear from you too… does this piano portrait stir a heart memory or two in you too?  🙂

dad's girl

With the photo atop the piano, this drawing of “My Cross-Over Piece”  also makes me think of a little one practicing her most special piece…

Maybe perfect as…

Do you have any vintage family photos that might make special portraits?  I’d love to see them.  If I do a drawing from your photo, I will gift you with a mini-print of that piece.

I’m especially interested in photos taken of young women or men of the 30’s or 40’s who kept the “home fires burning” (as described in my story above) or children of that era

Email your photos to me at pam.depoyan@gmail.com

P.S.

I wonder if you might do me a favor? 🙂 Please talk about this site with your friends on Facebook, Twitter and other social media and refer them here…along with anyone you know who might be looking for a Pen and Ink artist to custom create a portrait of a cherished part of their lives. *

I look forward to hearing what you think as you take a gallery link tour throughout! And remember to stop in often, as I’ll be adding new ‘pieces’ as I create them — as well as changing up the message in this “little communiqué spot” from time to time, to ask your thoughts and to keep you in the loop of any special offers, updates or seasonal greetings.   🙂

.

How do I start a gallery tour?

pointer bestSimply choose and click on a portrait ‘gallery’ link in “Categories,” just over there to the right!  🙂

*  U.S. purchases only, for now [However, if you are outside the country, and are interested, let’s talk – in some cases I may have a way to work something out with mail arrangements etc. ] 🙂

There’s something that always speaks to me in the elegant or charming portico or entryway to a home. In picturesque gateways that invite us in to someone’s story just beyond. Or beckon us to discovering… like the door to The Secret Garden. Artwork for your home that leads you in along stone pathways to your own imaginings of the story beyond the scene, each time you look at it…

• Choose one of these prints to decorate a cozy wall in any room
• Custom order a design of your own entry
– use as a party invitation or housewarming announcement from your photos
Consider an illustration of a unique architectural detail to a spot in your home or garden
Encourage a friend with a gift of a such an illustration – entryways that speak of new doors opening to light and joy, a lovely church door signifying a new marriage or significant celebration, a hidden garden…

IN THE GALLERY ROOM:  I’ll tell you a secret:  Though I’m smitten with the frontispiece quality of classic black and white — sometimes as I study a house photo to draw, I can’t resist a pop of color.  The creamy pale yellow of a bungalow.   The sky blue of the shutters.   If not on the original, I may add it to a print… just to see.

Other times, you, the client request that color touch.  I love to hear the role that color plays in your story behind the illustration, and to incorporate that  into the drawing for you.  The red door and shutters on the new widow’s home of so many family memories…  Or the red and white stripes of ‘Dad’s’ flag…

Ideas:

  • Gift a print of one of these charmers to someone who loves renovating old homes (whether on hands or virtually via HGTV! 🙂 )
  • Decorate an office, home library wall or bookshelf with prints
  • Use prints of the blue shutter storybook drawing or the blue door and awning children’s shop (shown below) to decorate a child’s room
  • Commission your own home portrait with a pop of color!
