Introducing…  A New Gallery Here…

Before they were famous — in portrait as children

Can you guess who these people are here in drawing?

.

1950 Family on Patio

From a photo taken in 1955, Pencil/Pen and Ink Portrait available now in my newest gallery: Before they were famous — in portrait as children

There was just something warm and nostalgic and lovely as a cherished classic movie that struck me the first time I came across this image, and I just knew — THIS was the one I had to draw.  That story-inviting feel of a once-upon-a-time young family that – though now well known – could be anyone, out on patio, spring blossoms framing windows, the gentle look of young son to dad, and mom taking them both in with her smile…

It reminds me of the wonderful vintage magazine covers I’ve loved to frame and decorate my own home with…  🙂

.

.

cherry blossoms in full bloom : Stock Photo

The idea seemed to fall like blossom petals on my shoulder…

Why not try my hand at portraits of people who have made a world difference in some way – not in the image we know them as in grown up years, but rather in capturing something of who they were as children – before they were famous?

They might be of people you admire or not…

Yet, when you look into their much younger faces, maybe you’ll find a bit of well known expression, a touch of endearing that makes you see them in a fresh light, gives a deeper insight of their story.  I think of “bring your  baby pictures to work days” when trying to guess who was who, I was struck by innocent smiles and softer hearts, how often I could still see the same shy smile in so and so, and how these pictures gave me insight into those I only thought I knew.  In some cases, made me more understanding and giving of grace.

little-girl-in-coat-and-hat-version-2At first, I brushed this portrait idea off as accidental.  For it began with another drawing I recently drew of this sweet one – completely unaware that it was a child snap of a great lady to be.  To me, it was only an endearing picture of a 1930’s child.

Who she was didn’t matter to me – I wasn’t drawing it for who she was, but for the cameo-sweet lines of her face, the softness of the coat and hat, the lush collar and zippy buttons marching down the front…

I had no inkling of the woman she became, respected worldwide, until quite unexpectedly, her name popped up.

Hmm, I thought.  I stared closer, trying to see the woman I knew in this little one.  I never would have guessed…but suddenly, I did see.

Do you???

I’d love to hear your guesses (write them in the comment section) on the identity of those in the family portrait above and the little vintage girl!

Feet on sakura petals : Stock Photo

Do you have any vintage family photos that might make special portraits?  I’d love to see them.  If I do a drawing from your photo, I will gift you with a mini-print of that piece.

I’m especially interested in photos taken of young women or men of the 30’s or 40’s who kept the “home fires burning” (as described in my story above) or children of that era

Email your photos to me at pam.depoyan@gmail.com

P.S.

I wonder if you might do me a favor? 🙂 Please talk about this site with your friends on Facebook, Twitter and other social media and refer them here…along with anyone you know who might be looking for a Pen and Ink artist to custom create a portrait of a cherished part of their lives. *

I look forward to hearing what you think as you take a gallery link tour throughout! And remember to stop in often, as I’ll be adding new ‘pieces’ as I create them — as well as changing up the message in this “little communiqué spot” from time to time, to ask your thoughts and to keep you in the loop of any special offers, updates or seasonal greetings.   🙂

.

How do I start a gallery tour?

Simply choose and click on a portrait ‘gallery’ link in “Categories,” just over there to the right!  🙂

*  U.S. purchases only, for now [However, if you are outside the country, and are interested, let’s talk – in some cases I may have a way to work something out with mail arrangements etc. ] 🙂

.

IN THE GALLERY ROOM:  I’ll tell you a secret:  Though I’m smitten with the frontispiece quality of classic black and white — sometimes as I study a house photo to draw, I can’t resist a pop of color.  The creamy pale yellow of a bungalow.   The sky blue of the shutters.   If not on the original, I may add it to a print… just to see.

Other times, you, the client request that color touch.  I love to hear the role that color plays in your story behind the illustration, and to incorporate that  into the drawing for you.  The red door and shutters on the new widow’s home of so many family memories…  Or the red and white stripes of ‘Dad’s’ flag…

Ideas:

  • Gift a print of one of these charmers to someone who loves renovating old homes (whether on hands or virtually via HGTV! 🙂 )
  • Decorate an office, home library wall or bookshelf with prints
  • Use prints of the blue shutter storybook drawing or the blue door and awning children’s shop (shown below) to decorate a child’s room
  • Commission your own home portrait with a pop of color!
