This piece came at the request of a woman’s church group who wanted to uplift a young grieving widow with a home portrait reflecting the story of her life with her husband, their faith, the promise of Life to come… To me, this image of a loving couple beside a cottage reflects the beginning of a new chapter in life, warmed by promise..

Have you ever found yourself thinking of a well known person or celebrity  and wondered what they were like as children?  Before they became known, maybe even changed, by the world?

Might you spot the same smile, the look in their eyes, the fun mannerism of today in that little one of long ago?

I think of the times at work when we were asked to bring in baby or childhood pictures to put up on a fun “guess who” board…  and how it always made me feel like I was getting a glimpse into a part their story I’d never know otherwise…

Ever fall in love with the homes and architecture from Cape Cod to  Williamsburg to Charleston?  Inspired by the quintessential American Artists, I’ve designed these modern day home  portraits (drawn from photos in local neighborhoods)  as an ode to the lasting charm of Currier & Ives and Norman Rockwell.   Modern decor or Early American… I think these homes speak warmth to us all…

Tea in The Cottage Garden on Bronson Lane

I created this one from a photo of an actual, tiny 1852 Victorian  in a nearby town, situated aside an old stone church founded in 1870.  (You can see my drawing of that quaint country church here:  Churches .)  The storybook feel of it’s dollhouse size captured me, inspiring me to create a spring in bloom  scene around it, adding touches of pink cast from the blossoms across the door window… These cafe chairs were outside in the photo, which led to the tea table in the garden…

This is for all the cottage lovers out there…but I could also see it brightening up a little girl’s room with a bit of story on the walls!  🙂

A quaint village hall built in the 1800’s, still heading the corner in the charming lakeside town of Saugatuck, MI

I wanted to make this hearken to the Norman Rockwell  ’40’s or  ’50’s vintage, when little girls and women often wore hats and dresses, and a sailor on leave might be out for a stroll… 🙂

New American Homestead:  “Dappled Morn”

“The house slept, dreaming in the sunshine…”  ~ D.E. Stevenson

Just now completed, this one is my favorite in this collection.   I experimented with graphite pencil on this to try and capture the wonder feel of early morning light as it dapples across the lawns… the way it brings a sense of BLESSING Presence on the neighborhood and all who walk there (even the bunny scampering in the quiet stillness) …  The resulting softness of the light stirs me the way it does when I’m actually walking in this charming local neighborhood… (does it for you?  🙂  )  And I think, the beginning of a fresh new style of “painting light” with black and white that I want to explore!

[When I increased the size of the photo I used as my drawing model, I found this cottage actually has what looks like a thatched roof made of lavender!  I can imagine driving  over rolling emerald hills and coming upon this charming scene – like a dream…  🙂  Even a little secret garden gate hidden behind the bench…]

(Don’t you love this charming real life tearoom?  I can almost hear the bell on the door calling me to tea and crumpets, or scones with clotted cream…   🙂  I think this will be the first of many of England’s Tearooms I will be adding here… Just can’t get enough of these!  I used a combo of pen and ink, graphite pencil and pastel to achieve this soft look…)

Remember when wonder tasted like Christmas morn?

In our often hurried, workaday lives it’s easy to lose sight of that sense of awe we know so naturally as children.  That zip across the ice, waltz in the snow, alleluia to the newborn King  kind of amazement that lights something within us, warms us like hands at a fire,  to the miracles all around us.  

I think there’s something indefinable about vintage images from the 1940’s that captures that wave of wonder… maybe the sense of nostalgia for classic holiday favorites like It’s a Wonderful Life, The Bishop’s Wife, Miracle on 34th Street… something that made me want to capture these for you here!  🙂

“Carols in the Falling Snow”

    1.  In a time when caroling seems like a long ago dream we’ve nearly forgotten, I wanted this drawing from a real life vintage scene of the 1940’s to capture the wonder and joy of singing in the snow for friends and neighbors.  I heard a young mom say recently how her six year old daughter’s eyes lit when she heard about caroling, how she begged, “Oh, mom – can we do that?”  Amazing to think she’d never heard of it before!  So… do you know any little ones who might be inspired to song by this print?

2.  In the same way, Christmas family photo cards seem to proliferate these days…. but  where have all those beautiful and fun old fashioned Christmas cards gone to…the ones that used to line our mantels from Uncle Joe and Sue and Tom and all the friends across the country?  Why not frame a print of this one to hearken in your Christmas decorations?

1. Classic, English style portraits mix so beautifully with modern and vintage decors so popular in HGTV fixer uppers – adding just the perfect warmth and charm to everything from a cottage nook to a living room wall.  This is my favorite style to draw  and to decorate with… though it speaks to me of Sound of Music (girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes) played at Christmas, it certainly makes a great piece for any time of year.  A gift for yourself or anyone who loves cottages, vintage, British, Early American…
2. This one reminds me of the sweet face of someone I know – a nice gift to remind her of being loved and thought of!  Maybe it recalls a friend of yours?  🙂

“Planning A Gift of Wonder Cheer”

1. Cheery for touch of Christmas in a child’s room… Drawn from a vintage photo of about 100 years ago, I love the way this one tells a story to me of doing for others, planning moments of wonder for those who need a bit of cheer (the little girl in this   appears to me to be unable to walk. I left out something that looked like possible leg braces beside her).  To me, the boys are in the true Christmas spirit of building a “thing of joy” to surprise little sis!  Loved that snowman of extraordinary height!  And the dog in protective mode around the sitting child…  🙂

“I Believe” :

1.  Remember the  wondrous moment in the movie, Miracle on 34th Street”, when little Natalie Wood spies the real live present she asked Edmund Gwenn for and screams for John Payne to stop the car?  Even when I no longer believed in Santa, that scene sprang tears to my eyes and renewed that sense of make believe wonder within me. 
2. And Gwenn’s tenderhearted portrayal of Santa simply IS Santa to me.   This one’s the perfect gift for anyone who cherishes this classic Christmas movie,  remembers their own belief in Santa, or simply loves nostalgia of Natalie Wood cheek to cheek with one she loved.  
3. Mm…a great gift for those who still believe…in wonder!

 (This is a drawing of the actual First Congregational Church of Ada, MI, founded in 1870.  The snow scene is how I imagine the wintry landscape looking, once upon a time.  The Christmasey story in my mind (purely invented) is that the dog is waiting for his master to come out of the boys choir practice inside  🙂

Discovering the artistry behind silver elegance — its not just for Downtown Abbey anymore!

Are there pieces of artwork that you feel bring a shine of God’s Grace to your home?

On that Day, all the horses’ harness bells will be inscribed “Holy to God.” The cooking pots in the Temple of God will be as sacred as chalices and plates on the altar. In fact, all the pots and pans in all the kitchens of Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to God-of-the-Angel-Armies.

If you are like me, I bet an occasional pretty or graceful silver piece has caught your eye here and there – maybe in a movie scene, a store display, or a found item on Antiques Roadshow.  But if you’ve ever priced them… well, extravagance is often an understatement.

Oh, I’ve never really craved much silver at all.  Too much in one room can be overwhelming. Yet… there is a sweetness, a lovely touch of tradition and heirloom about these in small groupings or individually — and as I began to put them into portrait here, I discovered such wonder and artistry I really never noticed in such objects before.

Incredible really – in the simplest of everyday implements like spoons — how so many unknown and unsung silversmiths have crafted swirl and light and charm into creating something memorable and lovely to have and hold.  Never just utilitarian…but works of real art.

And have inspired many a fun afternoon tea shared with loved ones!  🙂

I wonder as you look at my portraits below if you will see what seemed to come to life on paper before me…

• The way the chamber candlestick holder has the look of silver lace swirl
  
• How the dainty feet and flouncy style of the elegant tea server has the floaty look of a ballerina en pointe or a lady dressed in all her finery…
  
• The way the silver bon bon spoons look like bells about to ring
• How the creamer gleams it’s bit of English countryside
• The way the carriage clock seems to have four silver bells carved into it’s pillars

and more… 

And how the exquisite detail in these reminds me of God giving His people such minute, intricate details as to how He wanted things crafted with beauty and inventiveness… How He gifts us in creating, to reflect His beauty… like sunlight diamonds twinkling on water…

This is what these portraits speak to me… and I hope to you, as you scroll below…   🙂

Each of these images I’ve drawn is about 7×9, centered simply on 11×14 white drawing paper — I can just see them framed simply with the look of a modern graphic.  Perhaps hanging over a dining room buffet table or on a kitchen wall – singly or in a small grouping — adding just a touch of heirloom yet modern sparkle too.  A few others spread around the home from bedrooms to baby’s rooms to little nooks and crannies.

Silver – in itself, artwork meant to decorate your home that imparts grace…

with no need to polish!  🙂

Here are a few ideas on how I might personalize a particular piece for  you, in the same way you have a silversmith engrave your personal message…  🙂

 

In some cases, the design will allow for “engraving” right on the piece, as in this sample – initials or a name could be in the oval section above the leaf on the cup — and/or in the addition of a little “charm” (such as the leaf charm dangling from the handle below…) where I could pen a brief message…

 

• Request custom “engraving” of names and dates – for example, a baby’s baptism name and date added to a silver baby cup drawing
  
• Add a brief personal happy birthday, happy anniversary tag note to any of these
• “Engrave” initials or maybe a name and bible scripture reference on a piece
• Request a custom portrait of your own silver piece, or perhaps a silver trophy to be specially engraved for a champion in your life…

 

Here is another example of how you might add a message to a piece like this one — with an added dangle charm to write a brief note of congrats, happy 25th anniversary, etc!
